NBBG: Tell us about you... Mandy: I am a huge fitness lover, so working out has always been a part of my life. It's something that both my husband and I enjoy, and it's a great way for us to spend extra time together. On the other end of the spectrum, I am an avid baker. I am always trying new things, and my oldest daughter has taken a liking to it as well. It's a weekly question of "What are we going to make this weekend mom?" My hubby and other daughter really enjoy taste testing, so it's a win for us all. Other than that, I really just enjoy soaking up family time and spending as much time with my girls as I can before they figure out I am not near as cool as they think I am now.
NBBG: Do you do both hair and makeup or just one? If both, which is your favorite? Mandy: I just do makeup. I would love to do hair, and was taught hair in school, but I just can't quite get my fingers to work that way. LOL
NBBG: How did you get started in this industry? Mandy: I have always been a lover of beauty. I would beg my mom for her gifts with purchase from Merle Norman, and by the time I was 13 I had a nice collection of minis going. I have a masters degree in education and was working at a school, but I just didn't feel like it was where I was meant to be. My best friend was getting married on the beach and she knew, product junkie that I am, that I had the makeup, so she asked me to do her makeup. I, of course, said yes. And when I left that room, I knew, without a shadow of a doubt, that bridal is where my heart was, and I was determined to make a career out of it. I found a school in my area for makeup, and told my husband one day that I was going to quit my job, go to school (again!) and do makeup full time. He is very supportive, and simply said "OK". So, that's what I did. And I have had my own business ever since.
NBBG: Favorite color, food, movie, instagram or facebook, what is your ennegram #? Mandy: My favorite color is tied between white and blue. I guess it depends on the day. LOL Favorite movie is The Greatest Showman. I am a 6 on the enneagram scale, wing 5.
NBBG: What is your favorite part of being a bridal artist?
Mandy: My favorite part is that I get to be the smallest part of the bride's most important day, and that my work will live on in their pictures forever. I get to share in her joy. Weddings can be stressful, but they are a time of love and happiness, so I am almost always surrounded by those emotions while doing what I love to do, and I get paid to be there. That is what I call the perfect job.
NBBG: What song makes you chair dance?
Mandy: I Wanna Dance with Somebody by Whitney Houston
NBBG: Describe your aesthetic. Mandy: SKIN!! No really, skin is my aesthetic.....like real skin, the kind God gave you. I am all about bringing out the natural skin in my brides while still making them feel glammed up and special.
NBBG: Describe your ideal client. Mandy: My ideal client is someone who enjoys the process of getting her makeup done and doesn't stress about it. Someone who trusts my work, and can truly feel pampered, as you always should feel on your wedding day.
NBBG: What does a typical wedding day look like for you? Mandy: First and foremost, I fuel! Because let's face it....once I am on a job, food and drink are non existent. LOL Once I get to the venue (early ;) ) and set up, I make it a point to be the sense of calm for my brides. So, I go with the flow. Not every wedding runs smoothly, but I want my brides to feel nothing but calm when they sit in my chair. I want them to know it will all be ok....that as long as their groom and her are there, everything will be fine. I sometimes feel like I am part therapist, part makeup artist, and I wouldn't have it any other way. I love chatting with my clients, yet I am always very conscious of my time, and almost always finish early. I then pack up or stay for touch ups, leave and anxiously await what I know will be perfect pictures of their most special day.
NBBG: What do you want potential clients/brides to know about you? What do you want them to know about wedding day hair/makeup? Mandy: First and foremost, this is not about me. This is the brides's day; it's my job. So one of the first things I tell my brides is that unless you say something bad to my face about my kids, I don't get offended. LOL I don't want any of my brides to feel like they can't tell me if they want something changed or feel like something isn't working. That is what trials are for, and no matter what, they WILL be happy with their final look. As far as what I want them to know about wedding day hair and makeup? I want them to value the importance of both. So often, I find brides wait to book beauty until the very end. I personally think it needs to be booked with photography, because it is just as important. How you look will live on forever in the photos that brides spend an arm and a leg for, so beauty should be on the top of your list when booking vendors. While there are many to choose from, the good ones get booked up fast, so leaving that choice to the end probably isn't the best choice.
NBBG: Is there anything that makes you or your business unique? Mandy: It's hard to say, because I don't critique other businesses. I use my time to improve mine, not compare with others. But, I like to think that the relationships I build with my brides helps set me apart. I form lasting friendships with them, that end up turning into maternity shoot makeup, anniversary makeup and more. When I get a call from a bride from five years ago to do more makeup, I know I did something right.
NBBG: What are your favorite wedding day products? Mandy: Foundation, hands down. Because skin is my specialty, I love a good facial product. I have so many in my kit for every type of skin imaginable and I love working with them. Other than that, I would say false lashes. They can really make a look, and change the whole aesthetic of pictures.
